It's Everywhere!

The phone woke me this morning, which is odd. I’m usually up before it rings even though I haven’t set an alarm for years. When you get older stuff like that just happens. You don’t have to set an alarm because your body won’t sleep through the night anyway. Regardless, the phone rang and I answered it to a warning I had expected – School is closed.

When I went to bed I was a bit disappointed. The snow storm was moving slower than expected. Honestly, with our geography it was conceivable to miss out on it altogether since the Appalachians tend to push low-lying fronts north. But when I let the dog out I could see the snow had arrived and it was everywhere. Sure there were still dog tracks in the back yard and the path I dug the day prior remained, but everything had a fresh coat of white. I knew the city had come through and lain cinders yesterday while the sun was high and the temperature moderate, but I couldn’t see them. It didn’t take much to give everything that fresh, reborn look.

Meteorologically speaking there’s a whole complicated list of events that have to occur and conditions need to be within an exact range for snow to fall. We know that all that has to happen behind the scenes for the snow to fall, but it’s the result that matters. The temperature was just right, a crisp 29 degrees Fahrenheit, and the light snow which had only been falling for a couple of hours was just enough to cover up yesterday’s yellow snow and muddy tire tracks. It wasn’t deep – no Armageddon like they had in Erie, PA a few weeks ago when over six feet of snow fell. But it was enough.

The whole scene reminded me of the passage in Revelation.

“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away. He who was seated on the throne said, ‘I am making everything new!’” (Rev. 21:4-5, NIV)

Just like that, just like the fresh snow refreshed the earth, He makes all things new. If you’ve ever seen the snow fall after a week of cold, you know the scene has been set and it doesn’t take much to effect a dramatic change. I guess God just wanted me to have a little reminder this morning.

He makes all things new.
